Project Year:LiveA residence in Malappuram, Perinthalmanna, this abode is a contemporary take on the traditions and culture circling a typical habitat in Kerala. Modern innovations have been integrated into the base of the conventional elements of a home. The site itself is located on a small valley and provides much scope in terms of picturesque views. The foremost design challenge was to respond to the immediate surroundings and climate. This was optimized with large, almost floor-to-floor windows which allowed the scenic beauty to simultaneously contribute to the user experience. The predominantly tropical materials employed also keep in theme with locally available resources for the sloping roofs, tree courts, verandahs (all of which are commonly seen in Kerala houses) and even locally sourced arts and craft elements to accentuate the interiors. Each façade sits on a different level, allowing all spaces within the house to face the natural context – which in itself becomes the tropical architectural style adopted in the design.
